Stealing All Transmissions: A Secret History of The Clash by Randal Doane is a historical account of The Clash's rise to prominence in America. The book frames the relationship between the band and the U.S. as a "love story," detailing how rock journalists and deejays helped them break through a complacent American music scene. It covers the band's journey up to their iconic 1979 performance at the Palladium in New York City, a concert broadcast live on WNEW and marked by Paul Simonon's famous bass-smashing incident, immortalized on the cover of their album London Calling. This history provides a unique perspective on the punk era by highlighting the influence of free-form radio, rock journalism, and bootleg recordings. The book also includes original interviews with key figures from the New York punk scene and concludes with an analysis of how modern music consumption and file-sharing have impacted music and the written word.
